Opportunities for Reflection and Peer Connections: DMin Seminar

November 25, 2024

Over the last few weeks, we have been talking about some of the opportunities Kairos students have for reflection and peer connections. In particular, in this short series, we have been exploring online Reflection in Community (RIC) Sessions and the online Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Seminar. Both create an environment where students, regardless of their vocation or academic journey, can share and process their experiences.

Last week, we looked at Reflection in Community Sessions and the role they play in the discipleship journey of bachelor’s and master’s students. This week, we are excited to talk more about the role that the Doctor of Ministry Seminar plays within the Doctor of Ministry program and how the community created within the seminar is impacting students in the program. Let’s take a closer look.

The Doctor of Ministry Seminar offers DMin students the chance to come together for peer presentations. The seminar is designed to create a community of support for students as they prepare for and work on their DMin projects. These videoconference-style seminars bring together DMin students and faculty worldwide, allowing participants to observe and discuss each other’s work in real time. This space becomes a “human library” where students can access knowledge, ideas, and perspectives that are invaluable to their research and ministry.

These seminars are crucial to fostering a deep sense of community. Recent participants shared the following about their experiences:

“The seminars are a great confidence builder!  It is a safe place to share your thoughts and dreams for ministry with others who want to see you succeed. Constructive criticism helps with finetuning the vision God has given for ministry…. The key is to remember that the seminar is a place to shore up the weak spots and reinforce those areas that are already strong.” – Margaret, Doctor of Ministry student

“I watched several presenters in the DMin Seminar and was blown away by the profound and meaningful work in which the students are engaging.  I am thankful for the healing and life-changing work these students have said ‘yes’ to! Their work is a gift to the church!” – Beth, Kairos Affiliate Faculty; DMin graduate

“This fall, I thoroughly immersed myself in the seminar process and found it a fantastic platform and community. I appreciated the feedback I received from [the faculty] while waiting for the [peer] feedback. I found it to be extremely helpful and life-giving. I encourage new students to engage in the process from the beginning of their DMin journey, as it will give a clearer picture of what presentations should look like. The Fall seminars were motivating and extremely resourceful.” – Tanya, Doctor of Ministry student

RIC sessions and the DMin Seminar are two of the many ways that students can witness firsthand how the Holy Spirit is moving across various cultures, communities, and callings. By creating spaces for reflection, learning, and supportive community, Kairos is helping students grow in both their personal and vocational journeys. These sessions illustrate that learning is about building up a collective body of Christ-centered leaders who are prepared to serve their communities with wisdom, humility, and grace.
