Erie, CO
Spiritual Director and Cru Field Staff Member
We asked Dawn a few questions to learn more about her journey at Kairos. Here is what we discovered.
What led you to Kairos University?
I learned about Kairos during my participation in The Transforming Center in Chicago – where I met Dr. Greg Henson. He shared about Kairos and the unique way Kairos approaches theological training. It was compelling to think my years of ministry experience with Cru might help satisfy the Learning Outcomes in Kairos. Through the partnership between Kairos and the Transforming Center, I decided to pursue more theological training in Bible and Theology as well as training in Spiritual Direction.
As I began my journey in Kairos, it was a paradigm shift to initiate my learning. However, once I jumped in, I loved pursuing compelling topics for my personal ministry context. My faculty mentor, Dr. Susan Reese, greatly influenced my educational journey, encouraging and motivating me throughout my experience. My interactions with all the faculty and staff at Kairos were positive and encouraging and I felt very supported during my program.
I am grateful Kairos provides theological training at a very affordable price. The cost of a more traditional seminary kept me from pursuing it elsewhere.
What moments or experiences at Kairos have been most meaningful in your journey?
I attended Kairos during the Covid pandemic, which included significant cultural issues arising in the US. Driven by a desire to understand my privilege as a white woman, I was reading a lot of material related to intercultural issues. My faculty mentor noticed my reading list and suggested I incorporated it into my outcomes, which led to an emphasis in intercultural studies. I was encouraged to pursue topics I found interesting and felt my program was tailor made for me. I felt freedom to make my program my own—which increased my learning substantially.
How has your love for Jesus grown during your time at Kairos?
Kairos encouraged me to keep my own relationship with Jesus primary. I grew in wisdom, but more importantly in desire to walk with Christ. I especially enjoyed the gatherings and coming together as a community to encourage and motivate each other in being a disciple of Jesus—not just a student learning more knowledge. My experience in Kairos increased my desire for ministry, something I have been doing for 40 years.
What advice do you have for someone considering attending Kairos University?
I never dreamed I would go back to school—especially at my age, yet I am so grateful for the opportunity to attend Kairos University. It doesn’t matter how old you are, furthering your education and having a group of people supporting you in that decision is one of the best decisions I’ve made.
How can the Kairos Community continue to support and pray for you in your current role?
I felt very supported while participating in Kairos, and if I further my education at some point I will turn to Kairos first. I appreciate being invited to facilitate discussion groups during gatherings and remain part of the “Kairos family.”
