We asked Nick a few questions to learn more about his journey at Kairos. Here is what we discovered.
What led you to Kairos University?
Over the last several years, I have looked at learning and education differently than I have in the past. I was always taught that learning means to get good grades, versus learning to gain a better understanding of what you are studying.
When I heard about Kairos’ approach to learning, I was sold from the start. It was the first time in my life where I was challenged to “connect the dots” with what I learned and how I am going to apply this in my life. It changed my mindset from chasing a letter grade on a page, to seeking deeper understanding so I could make more well thought out decisions in all aspects of my life.
My mentors have made a huge impact on me, both as a person and as a leader. I can get so wrapped up in reaching a specific goal that I forget about the journey and the process that I took to get there. They challenged me to see learning not as something with an end, but as a “horizon”.
What moments or experiences at Kairos have been most meaningful in your journey?
My overall understanding of learning has been turned upside down since I started my journey with Kairos. Coming into Kairos University, my understanding of learning was to watch a lecture, read a book, and take a test. Going through Kairos, I took every circumstance I came across as an opportunity to understand the situation, reflect on it, learn from it, and apply it to my life. I am still reading books to learn, but I am now being more intentional with the reflection and recap as I finish them. I now try to have a plan on how I’m going to utilize this new information.
How has your love for Jesus grown during your time at Kairos?
Although we took a different approach because of my vocation, I was still able to grow tremendously in my faith. The new approach to learning has opened up my eyes to being okay without the absolutes in life.
What advice do you have for someone considering attending Kairos University?
Kairos University was a completely different educational experience than anything I had ever been involved with in the past. This made me a bit uneasy to jump in, however, taking the leap of faith to enroll and trust the process was more than worth it for me, both personally and professionally.
How can the Kairos Community continue to support and pray for you in your current role?
Obedience has been on my heart for the past few years. I tend to be very strong-willed, even stubborn, about what I want to accomplish. Instead, I am striving to be more obedient and aware of what God is calling me to do, whatever that calling may be.
