National missionary, partnering with the Hungarian Baptist Convention and the North American Baptist Conference
We asked Miriam a few questions to learn more about her journey at Kairos. Here is what we discovered.
What led you to Kairos University?
I am a national missionary. I work with Hungarian Baptist local churches in Romania, focusing on youth ministry and running camp and discipleship programs in cooperation with the North American Baptist Conference.
What moments or experiences at Kairos have been most meaningful in your journey?
The combination of education and vocational ministry increased my love and passion for Christ. Though I greatly love education, if I took on this journey only focusing on enlarging theoretical understanding, I might not have had such great appreciation and depth to my studies. However, I love the fact that what I am studying is not just dry, theoretical material, but it challenges my everyday life and calls me to contextualize and implement my learnings into my present ministry vocation. This results in character transformation, not just in intellectual development.
Kairos helped me ask important and relevant questions about my personal faith walk as well as about the people I serve, which allowed me to grow in contextual awareness and better serve my community.
I am very grateful for the challenge of developing theological hospitality through Kairos, which is a characteristic much needed in my context. While being part of such a diverse and global community as Kairos, I have grown in my awe and awareness of God’s present work in our world. I’ve also come to develop greater appreciation and gratitude for God’s faithfulness, not just in my life, but throughout history.
How has your love for Jesus grown during your time at Kairos?
Education was always important to me and I still find much joy in studying. As I finished high school, I wanted to explore the opportunity of working in the mission field, but also wanted to get further educational training so I can do my vocation well.
I heard about Kairos from Paul and Tanya Gericke, who were NAB missionaries to Romania at the time, and were enrolled in the [university]. They encouraged me and supported me to finish my BA with Kairos and pursue a master’s program later on. I soon fell in love with the “nontraditional” setup of outcome-based learning and the opportunity of customizing my journey based on what will benefit my vocational ministry best.
I also greatly appreciate the thorough education Kairos offers with the possibility of remote studying because this makes it possible for me to do full-time ministry overseas and continue with my education at the same time. Not that I wouldn’t love to be a full-time student on campus.
What advice do you have for someone considering attending Kairos University?
I love the connections built through Kairos. I especially encourage everyone who decides to enroll to take part in Learning Experiences, where you can connect with other Kairos students. This is where I got to meet so many people from around the world with different cultures and vocations, and yet, all seeking to faithfully follow Christ. It is so eye-opening and encouraging to see a little bit more of the “body of Christ” that I am also part of.
How can the Kairos Community continue to support and pray for you in your current role?
I’ve always loved working with local churches in Romania and I am filled with so much anticipation for what God is doing now in my country. I love seeing young and old people become more devout to God and living an authentic, faithful Christian life while opening up space for the work of the Spirit. Much hardened ground is being broken up and softened, preparing the good soil that will allow planted seeds to grow and result in a rich harvest.
Pray for our churches and more followers of Christ to come to a contrite heart and submission, that leads to obedience and perseverance, so the whole nation of Romania may know the one true God and worship him.
